Ireland 2017

Photos taken in June 2017 in Ireland. Jim, Corinne, Erika, and I met in Dublin and then drove to southwestern Ireland. After a brief stop in Cobh (Cove), we went on to Portmagee and made the amazing trek to Skellig Michael. While Jim, Corinne, and Erika braved the 600 steep, treacherous, rocky steps up to the Monastery, I stayed below and communed with the Puffins.

After Portmagee, we drove north along the west coast through Ballaghasheen Pass and Ballaghbeama Gap in the Kerry Mountains, then on to the Cliffs of Moher, and finally a brief stop in Galway.

Then it was on to Donegal Town where Mary and Chris and Devon and Marcus joined us. Gary/Dad/Grandpa loved Donegal and imagined that’s where his Irish family came from, so we took a cruise and scattered his ashes in Donegal Bay. I now know the true meaning of the word “bittersweet."

While in Donegal, we spent one day traveling around the northern end of the county where we went to the cliffs at Slieve League, found an amazing dolman in a sheep pasture behind St. Conal’s Church, and stopped by Assaranca Waterfall.

After a weekend in Donegal, Devon and Marcus flew off to Paris and Mary and Chris headed to Iceland. Jim, Corinne, Erika, and I went to Belfast where we had dinner at The Crown (my favorite pub in all the world) and visited the truly awesome Titanic Museum. Afterword, I headed back to Dublin and took a tour to the Hill of Tara and Newgrange — the 5,000-year-old passage tomb — (Alas, photos were not allowed inside the passage). Then I flew back home.

The 9-minute Ireland video on the movies tab includes many of the same photos here in the album, but it also includes several short video clips (and Irish music too).
